As a passionate advocate for inclusive education and communication, I found myself in a classroom setting facing a challenge that demanded a creative solution. Engaging with a group of children, I noticed that only the verbal kids could actively participate by answering questions. The non-verbal children, despite their eagerness, were often left on the sidelines. This gap fueled my determination to create a space where every child, regardless of their communication abilities, could participate in every activity.
Drawing from my experience as a Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist working with non-verbal children, I began crafting hands-on materials that focused on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). These materials weren't just tools; they were bridges, connecting children with the means to express themselves and engage meaningfully with their surroundings.
The turning point came when I brought my handmade materials into the classroom. The response from special education teachers was overwhelming: "Wow! These are great, you should sell them!" And so, the seed for All Hands On Language was planted. With a genuine commitment to making a difference, I embarked on a journey to design and curate materials with AAC in mind, ensuring that each product serves as a stepping stone towards enhanced communication and inclusion.
